The Zollverein Schacht 12 coal processor in Essen was  part of the German Ruhr industrial complex. At the height of its productivity the Ruhr  complex employed 500,000 people. When I photographed this plant in 2000, only 50,000 were still at work in this industry/region. The Zollverein facility is now a Unesco World Heritage Site.
